Janmoni Gogoi, a resident of Saphakati village of Dibrugarh’s Bogibeel area in Assam, is a teenage girl who has been selling vegetables on her bicycle during the times of Corona lockdown to make the ends meet. Being the sole bread-winner of her family, she had to quit on her dreams of pursuing higher studies after the completion of her school education from Dibrugarh Government Girls’ Higher Secondary School.

After her story going viral on the social and local media, the principal of Dibrugarh Hanumanbax Surajmall Kanoi College, Mr. Shashi Kanta Saikia expressed his eagerness to sponsor her further education. Upon being inspired by her struggle, the gesture made by the Police department showcases empathy and compassion.

Dibrugarh Police of Assam decided to make a gesture by gifting this young vegetable seller, a bike. The tweet put up by the Police department reads: “Janmoni Gogoi sells vegetables on a bicycle to fend for her family. Inspired by her self-respect & guided by our visionary @DGPAssamPolice Sir’s direction to transform ourselves from police force to facilitators of economy, DYSP HQ gifted the little entrepreneur a moped/bike.”

The act indeed grabbed enough attention among the netizens, especially the Twitterati. Whereas some lauded the positivity instilled by the girl’s story of struggle and hard work, others appreciated the efforts taken by the police department. Even others credited it as an act of humanity. From the vapid generalization of ‘police not being worth of either friendship or enmity’, this act by the police has compelled the Twitterati to take a bow with respect.

Though the overall image of the police across the country is not always pleasant, police departments being on the frontline of the war against Covid-19 have shown enough resilience and patience in dealing with the situation and keeping the law and order of the country under control. Once again, this act of kindness by the police rekindles the fact that guaranteeing protection may come hand in hand with facilitation.

Taking a cue from the Police and appreciating the efforts of the Corona warriors, how are you spreading happiness among others?
