Going green on Diwali has been trending this season. From green crackers to a complete ban on them, India has been calling upon citizens to save the environment, in turn safeguarding themselves.

In such times, Samaj Shakti Society, a non-profit social organization based in Tripura has introduced very beautiful yet completely safe bamboo candles during the Diwali season.

organic bamboo candles

These bamboo candles are made by women who have been trained under the bamboo craft program of the NGO. They are made of four colors and different designs on bamboo shells that are filled with wax and a wick in the center. Apart from being used as candles, they can also be used as decorative pieces and pretty gifts.

Our trainees have created candles, bottles, ornaments, showpieces, and candles out of bamboo in Jirania and Tebaria workshops. So far the response of our products has been really good,” says Anuja Biswas, Founder of Samaj Shakti Society.

The candles are available in the local markets of Tripura. These training programs have been conducted in collaboration with the Forest Research Centre For Livelihood Extension (FRCLE) with assistance from Director Dr. Pawan Kaushik.

The NGO has been engaged in various forms of humanitarian social service activities since November 2016. The society’s members always try to make their service available to every human without any distinction of caste, race, or religion because they believe God lives in every human being.

Yet amongst all, Samaj Shakti Society especially works for the development of women’s upliftment which includes programs for awareness of their hygiene, training sessions where tailoring and beautician courses are taught, and more that have been conducted throughout the state.

They also conducted a self-defense program statewide which trained over 1000 girls.

Lots of women in Tripura have no source of income but have time after household work so we want them to use this time so that they are financially independent. Our vision is to develop more confident women in all aspects of life – civil, economic, social, cultural, etc.,” adds Biswas.

So far, the society has been managing its funds through Public Funding. If you wish to donate, click here.
