If you are musically talented and your parents were born in New York, you have an excellent chance of becoming a Spotify star.

That’s according to recent research by Betway, which has revealed that the Big Apple has birthed more than its fair share of streaming stars.

The study was part of a wider investigation into which places make successful people and the most recognizable stars on the planet.

Across the top 100s in ten different categories, the data highlighted that New York is the cream of the crop, with 48 recognized stars born in the city that never sleeps.

New York leads the way for Spotify’s most-streamed artists, with eight music acts appearing in the top 100 including Lady Gaga.

The champion of LGBTQ+ causes has racked up nearly 13.5 billion streams, putting her ahead of notable acts such as The Beatles, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Arctic Monkeys.

Cardi B, Pop Smoke, and Lana Del Rey are other notable New York artists that are enjoying huge success on Spotify.

London claims second place on the list with five acts, although none of them compare to Halifax-Born Ed Sheeran who is in the upper echelons of Spotify’s top 100.

Other US cities to fare well in the Spotify stakes are Atlanta (4), Houston (2), Los Angeles (2), and Philadelphia (2).

While New York music undoubtedly shines in terms of representation in the top 100, Toronto is the place that generates the biggest streaming numbers.

Drake is currently top of the pile in the all-time Spotify top 100, ahead of Sheeran and Bad Bunny, with fellow Toronto native The Weeknd in touching distance of the top three.

However, while Canada can rightly be proud of its efforts, US acts are unquestionably the dominant force on Spotify right now.

Of the top 100 most streamed artists of all time, 60 of them hail from the US. That tally includes four of the current top 10.

Florida-born songstress Ariana Grande is at the top of the pile for the US acts ahead of Eminem, Taylor Swift, and Post Malone.

The two-time Grammy Award winner set a new record last year, becoming the first female artist to twice break 70 million monthly listeners.

Los Angeles’ tally of just two artists in the top 100 is perhaps a little surprising, particularly given the strength of the music scene on the west coast.

Billie Eilish and Doja Cat are the only two LA-born stars to make it onto the list, although there is plenty of Californian representation alongside them.

They include Kendrick Lamar, Tyga, and G-Eazy, while ‘California Girls’ singer Katy Perry is also firmly entrenched inside the top 100.

Texas is one of the largest states in the US but has only contributed three stars to Spotify’s top 100 – Beyonce, Selena Gomez, and Travis Scott.

Ultimately, if you want to have the best chance of making it big on Spotify, being born in New York is a good place to start.
