Bollywood, India’s vibrant and influential film industry, has gradually made strides toward inclusivity and diverse representation. While it has seen significant progress in various aspects, the portrayal of transgender characters remains a complex and sensitive issue.

Despite increasing awareness and acceptance of the transgender community in society, there are significant challenges faced by real transgender individuals when it comes to getting cast in Bollywood films.

The casting of Karnataka’s First Trans-Woman Doctor, Trinetra Haldar, in Made In Heaven Season 2 is an inspiring tale of determination and taking a chance on her dreams. Two years ago, while she was working as a doctor during her internship at the hospital, Trinetra decided to audition for the show. Despite having no prior contacts in the entertainment industry and facing financial constraints with a meager intern’s stipend, she leaped because she felt a deep desire to pursue her passion for acting.

Trinetra’s story reflects the power of self-belief, perseverance, and the courage to follow one’s dreams, even when the circumstances seem challenging and uncertain. Landing a significant role in the entertainment industry without any connections or prior experience is a testament to her talent and dedication.

In an interview with a media house, Trinetra says, “I would give it my all to see an actual representation of trans women on the big screen, rather than a man playing a trans woman because audiences continue to believe trans women are men in dresses and that our womanhood isn’t real. This has a direct influence on our rights. When a cis woman plays a trans woman, she often sets unachievable standards of beauty for us, almost as if reinforcing the idea of womanhood and what it should look like – the cis way. Either way, an opportunity is taken away from trans talent.”

Cisgender Actors in Transgender Roles

Casting cisgender actors in transgender roles can sometimes be seen as a strategy to attract a wider audience and generate initial interest, which can indeed have its merits in terms of commercial success and creating awareness. However, it’s crucial to recognize that this approach should not replace genuine transgender representation by transgender individuals themselves.

By casting cisgender actors in transgender roles, there is a missed opportunity to showcase the diverse talents and lived experiences of actual trans individuals, contributing to erasing their voices and struggles.

Lack of Opportunities

The film industry is highly competitive, and very few directors were brave enough to talk about transgender stories sensitively. However, most films have shamelessly portrayed transgender characters as caricatures or one-dimensional characters, reinforcing stereotypes and hindering authentic representation.

Collaborate with Transgender Experts

Engaging transgender consultants and experts during filmmaking can ensure an accurate and empathetic portrayal of transgender characters.

Representing transgender characters in Bollywood films is crucial to fostering inclusivity and understanding. While the industry has progressed in portraying transgender characters, there is still a long way to go regarding authentic representation and casting transgender individuals in appropriate roles.

Bollywood has produced several films that feature transgender characters. Some movies have genuinely depicted their lives with sensitivity and authenticity, while others have faced criticism for perpetuating stereotypes. Examples of films with transgender characters include:

Tamanna (1998)

Starring Paresh Rawal and Pooja Bhatt, this film portrays the struggles of a transgender singer who faces rejection and discrimination but ultimately finds acceptance through her talent.

Begum Jaan (2017)

While not explicitly about transgender characters, this film includes a transgender sex worker, played by Vivek Shauq, whose character brings attention to the plight of the transgender community.

Laxmii (2020)

In this horror-comedy, Akshay Kumar plays a transgender character who seeks revenge for the injustice faced by a transgender woman. The casting of a cisgender actor in this role received mixed reviews.

Taali (2023)

A biographical web series based on the remarkable journey of Shreegauri Sawant- an activist who fought for transgender rights to be recognized as the third gender, granting them legal recognition and protection played by the seasoned actor Sushmita Sen.
