1. Birthday Flowers

Who would not love answering the door to a beautiful bouquet of flowers? Flowers are a classic way to say: I love you! I am thinking of you! I am so glad you were born! Getting birthday flowers delivered to a loved one is a wonderful way to put a smile on their face and boost their special day. This is a fantastic option especially if your loved one lives in a different city, and you are unable to deliver a gift or surprise in person. I called my grandmother on her 90th birthday yesterday, and all she could talk about was the flowers that all four of her children sent her. I am telling you, flowers leave people feeling delighted, warm, and affirmed.

2. Handmade Cards

A birthday card is an easy and heartfelt way to show love on someone’s birthday, or you can give a Group Card for Friend. Hallmark has birthday cards ingrained in our brains as the quintessential thing to get someone to celebrate the anniversary of their birth. But what Hallmark does not want you to know is that making a card by hand is truly the epitome of an earnest birthday gesture. Using creative materials like watercolors and pastels, or collaging with images from an old magazine are all great ways to have fun and create a beautiful piece of artwork for your loved one on their birthday. Get inspired by various art styles you know the birthday person loves!

You can also involve your kids! Invite them to help, and provide them with fun stickers or stamps to express their creativity and love for the birthday person. While cards may not always feel like a surprise on someone’s birthday, the handmade touch adds an extra spark that no one is expecting to receive!

3. Bake a Sweet Treat

Staying on the homemade train… you can also make a delicious birthday treat for your loved one’s special day. While the cake is a traditional birthday sweet treat, it can feel stressful to make. Consider alternatives like cupcakes, cookies, or brownies. Again, this can be a super sweet opportunity to involve your kids. You might even create some cherished memories while you are at it! If baking at home feels totally out of reach, there is no shame in considering a cake mix or picking something up, or ordering at a bakery! Honestly, you can stick candles in almost anything and call it a birthday dessert! Depending on the preferences of your birthday person you can ring their doorbell with the sweet treat or leave it on their doorstep!

4. Fly in an Out of Towner

Our last suggestion for a good birthday surprise takes things to the next level! You can have a loved one of your loved one, who lives out of town, go and surprise that person on their special day. Flying in a long-distance family member or friend makes the birthday a community event. And part of your gift is supporting coordination: getting them a place to stay, transportation, and general logistics. This can be an extremely fun way to make the birthday person feel dotted on and thought of! It is an experience, rather than a physical gift. Plus, it creates an opportunity to yell: SURPRISE!

With these four tips, you’re certain to create a special birthday moment for someone you love. Happy celebrating!
