“Re Kabira Man Ja.. Re Fakira Man Ja.. Aja Tujhko Pukare Teri Parchhaiyan…”

Singing already? I know, this movie, this song, their on and off relationship are just way too romantic to not fall for.

And it’s not just them, but each character of the movie is at their best. Be it Aditi aka Kalki Koelchin, Abhi aka Aditya Roy Kapoor, and all other supporting characters, make this movie an unforgettable tale. It isn’t the story even actually; each of the different film components come together to create the masterpiece it is. And it wouldn’t be wrong to say that this piece explores the grown-up 90’s kids like no one did.

How can we not mention the music? This film has got songs that will never leave our playlist till we die. I’m kidding. And that’s rare, considering the volume of songs that come and go these days.

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani

But we are specifically here to talk of Bunny and Naina, the protagonists and, at the time of the release, the most talked about couple in B’ Town. Ranbir and Deepika are undeniably the best matches that any viewer would want to see in the present times. It’s partly because of their intense chemistry in the characters of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani.

Bunny’s portrayal as a carefree, fun, and adventure-loving guy who can go to any extent to fulfill his dreams strikes a chord with many. He wants to see the world, taste it, and also have a fluid relationship status. He says, ‘Ishq sehat ke liye kharab hai’, and ‘badtameezi ek beemari hai’, which he carries too well. The media has shown Ranbir in a bad light when it comes to his relationships, as he had multiple of them. But fans would partially disagree, saying that he is too charming and that ‘Jawani’ is meant for ‘Diwani’.

But Bunny is more than that. He is a child without a mother, a son to a middle-class father who had a second marriage, a poor student – backbencher – probably battling his unhappiness deep down. The absence of his mother and the entry of his stepmother, although not evil, detaches him from family. Bunny’s father is close to him, but he somehow felt like any child that his second marriage created a rift between them which was not true. He realizes it quite later when he is no more.

This turmoil somehow freed him and propelled him to see the world and detach from emotions. We see him liking Naina but not moving forward in fear of attachment. We feel for the imperfect and bold guy, and we live through his dialogues very dearly.

Likewise, Naina has a dangerous smile, as Bunny says. We get to see Deepika’s beauty at its peak in this movie. No other film can replace the wonder she created in the shows of Naina.

Her character is in many ways the opposite of Bunny. She has parents who are too possessive about her. She is a book nerd, topper, and completely homebound. It was only after meeting Aditi that she dared to go to Manali. This hill station trip shows us shades of Naina that we never anticipated before. She just has to win and overcome all odds, no matter what. In short, she is perfect in every way, and that’s what sets her apart from the crowd. Bunny notices her and even slightly falls for her, which he would not admit. He did not want ‘Dal Chawal till 50 sal’ right away when he met her. He wanted to live his dream first.

Naina is sweet and understanding. She respects Bunny’s dreams, she loves her family, and respects their expectations out of her; she stands by Aditi when Abhi ditches her and leads that hell of a girl with the right guy to the aisle. She is sense and sensibility personified.

Bunny was bound to melt, and he did, and we couldn’t be happier. That climax on New Year will be played on and on every year on social media for years till we live. We may remember someone we lost, someone we look forward to, or someone we live with, and fall in love all over again in that brief moment.

Thank you Ayan Mukerji for giving this ride of a lifetime!
