Breakdancing or breaking is a form of street dance that is said to have originated in the Bronx, New York in the 1970s. It is known to be the oldest form of hip-hop style of dance. Incorporating intricate body movements, coordination, style, and aesthetics in dance is not an easy task and yet we see b-boys or b-girls perform it with ease.
Recently, organizers of Paris 2024 have proposed to include breakdancing as a new sport in the Olympics program, as mentioned in the CNN report. Apart from this dance form, 3 other sports have been suggested such as – surfing, climbing, and skateboarding.
The confirmation is yet to be made and the final approval will come from the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which has until December 2020 to decide the fate of this dance form as a new sport.
With an aim to rejuvenate the Olympics, this proposal was made and an IOC spokesperson told CNN that the committee was pleased with the proposal.
The IOC statement read, “We are pleased to see that Paris 2024’s proposal for new sports to the Olympic programme is very much in line with the reforms of Olympic Agenda 2020, which is striving to make the Olympic programme gender-balanced, more youth-focused and more urban.”
Though, this is not the debut of Breakdancing in the Olympics. Previously, the sport was included in the 2018 Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires, Argentina, but only time will tell about its inclusion in the full senior programme.
