It’s been a few decades since the world was introduced to genderless fashion. Though the initial intent was to bring in comfort in clothing, it now has a deeper meaning: to represent the blurred boundaries of gender orientation and unify all.
To our delight, some Kerala Government Schools have taken the helm of imbibing the sense in students right from a tender age.
Averting all eyes from the controversial dress code for teachers in Kerala, a lower primary government school has set an example by adopting gender-neutral uniforms for its students. This infers that all students wear similar uniform designs, irrespective of gender. The practice has been adopted at a school in Valayanchirangara in the Ernakulam district.
Back in 2018, the then headmistress of the school, C Raji, introduced the gender-neutral uniform policy. The idea reportedly came to her when she observed that girls were facing problems with wearing skirts.
Following this, the uniforms were supported by ninety percent of the parents as well as the kids.
The school uniform consists of a shirt and three-fourth of a trouser.
However, this is not the only school in Kerala with gender-neutral uniforms. Apart from this, there are three other schools that have this policy, and one of them is yet to implement it.
Ranni Government Lower Primary School in Pathanamthitta district had implemented gender-neutral uniforms all the way back in 2014 and the same was followed at Karyambadi Government Lower Primary School in Wayanad since 2018. Similarly, the Pilicode government school in Kasargod had made a similar decision two years ago but could not implement it due to Covid-19 related hassles.
