Bollywood actor Randeep Hooda will be seen playing the role of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar in the biopic Swatantra Veer Savarkar.

On the occasion of Veer Savarkar’s 139th birth anniversary celebrated as Veer Savarkar Jayanti which falls on May 28, the makers shared the first look of Randeep Hooda as the freedom fighter. The movie will be directed by Mahesh Manjrekar.

Sharing the first-look poster of Swatantra Veer Savarkar Hooda wrote, “A salute to one of the tallest unsung heroes of India’s struggle for freedom & self-actualisation. hope I can live up to the challenge of filling such big shoes of a true revolutionary & tell his real story which had been brushed under the carpet for so long #VeerSavarkarJayanti (sic).”

Internet users have been seemingly taken aback by Randeep Hooda’s Veer Savarkar transformation.

“ONE MORE CLASSIC FROM ONE OF MY FAVOURITE ACTOR….. AFTER SARABJEET….I HOPE MAHESH MANJREKAR AND YOU WILL DO JUSTICE TO THE HISTORY….WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED…..,” wrote a user.

“Will be biggest hit of your career. Congratulations in advance,” predicts another.

Hooda in biopics

Earlier, Randeep was seen playing the biopic of Indian painter Raja Ravi Verma – ‘Rang Rasiya’. The film was screened at 2008 The Times BFI London Film Festival.

He also played the role of Sarabjit Singh, an Indian man who was sentenced to death by the Supreme Court of Pakistan in 1991 and who consequently spent 22 years in prison for alleged terrorism and spying in biopic Sarbjit(2016).

Vinayak Damodar Savarkar was born on May 28, 1883, at Bhagur village of Nashik district in Maharashtra. He was one of the most important figures of the Hindu Mahasabha, a Hindu nationalist organisation and a political party. He was a politician, activist and writer. He is known to have developed the Hindu nationalist political ideology of Hindutva. Veer Savarkar died on February 26, 1966, in Bombay.
