Having a nice smile is definitely an asset in many contexts. So it’s possible that orthodontic treatments are in your mind — or in your future. If you have just started orthodontic treatment or even if you are thinking about getting braces, there are a couple of things that you need to ask yourself, and the most important is probably how to make sure that you get the most out of your orthodontic treatment. Dr. Frédéric Lavoie – Orthodontiste answers this essential question.

1. Mind Your Oral Hygiene During the Whole Process

Unsurprisingly enough, the most crucial thing you need to do during your orthodontic treatment is to maintain near-perfect oral hygiene at all times. That means brushing your teeth 3 times a day, at least, and flossing on a daily basis too. Impeccable oral hygiene will help ensure that your teeth remain as healthy and strong as possible, but also that you don’t have to endure the unpleasant “bracket stains”.

Bracket Stains: What Are They?

Bracket stains are stains that are usually white and permanent. It’s not uncommon for some people to start having bracket stains following orthodontic treatment. They are caused by an excessive amount of plaque building up over a long period of time. They often take the rectangular shape that characterizes most of the brackets on the market.

That being said, bracket stains are not a fatality! You can easily prevent their apparition by following the hygiene recommendations listed above, namely by brushing and flossing on a daily basis. Good oral hygiene during treatment will ensure that your smile looks fantastic after all the work you’ve put into it!

2. Keep Certain Types of Foods Out Of Your Mouth

Another thing you have to think about during your orthodontic treatment is the food you put in your mouth. Indeed, certain types of food are known to cause breakage in braces. More specifically, you should be wary of foods that are either sticky or very hard when you wear braces. Gooey and / or sticky foods affect orthodontic bands and can cause them to become loose, adhering to the braces and teeth. Said adhesion may result in cavities because of the sugary nature of the aforementioned sticky foods. Hard foods like ice cans and nuts can also cause brace damage, which can, in turn, lead to a longer treatment. Eating food like popcorn and cob can also cause problems during your orthodontic treatment because they tend to get stuck in braces very easily — and you can imagine why. Stay clear of all these types of food to get the most out of your orthodontic treatment!

3. Don’t Skip Your Adjustment Visits

Following your schedule when it comes to your adjustment visits is of the utmost importance if you want to obtain excellent results with your braces. This means attending all your visits when your orthodontist recommends them. Generally speaking, braces need to be adjusted every four to eight weeks or so, and it’s important to respect the schedule set by your orthodontist in this regard. If you absolutely need to reschedule an appointment from time to time, it’s not a big deal, but you need to make sure to follow as closely as possible your original adjustment schedule.

4. When In Doubt, Ask Questions

Wearing braces is not a reason to keep your mouth shut, especially if you’re experiencing lifestyle issues or any type of discomfort with your braces. A decent orthodontist won’t have any problems answering all your questions or even adjusting your treatment plan if you’re really having serious issues with it. Don’t suffer in silence or stay ignorant: speak up and ask anything you feel you need to know.

5. Focus On The Finish

At the end of the day, the end goal of this whole process is to get the most beautiful smile you can have for a lifetime! Keep that in mind during the treatment, that will help you endure the minor inconveniences that will make you doubt here and there. A beautiful smile is well worth the trouble of orthodontic treatment, trust us!
