The 1990s can very well be marked as the golden era of Indian Pop Music. Be it singles, band songs, or those curated by singers themselves, the music back then was a rage.
With time the music trends changed and band members scattered or dissipated, yet they left a bunch of melodious memories for us to revisit. Here are the top 5 Indian bands from the 90’s decade that made us groove.
Euphoria
Euphoria is one of those rare bands which has stood the test of time and is active even today. The band was started in 1988, headed by lead singer Palash Sen with his friends in Delhi. Check out albums like Dhoom, Phir Dhoom, and Mantra to hear more. Below is the link to our pick: ‘Maeri’.
Bombay Vikings
Bombay Vikings was launched in the year 1994 by Neeraj Shridhar, along with his co-musicians Mats Nordenborg, and Oscar Soderberg. Later on, the original members of the band moved on, and Neeraj included new members. They were known more for making remixes of old Bollywood songs like the one we have shared here.
Silk Route
Silk Route started in the year 1998 with the album Boondein with Mohit Chauhan as the lead vocalist and guitarist, Kem Trivedi as the keyboard player, Atul Mittal as the lead guitarist, clarinet-player, and backing vocals, and Kenny Puri as the percussionist and drummer. The band’s songs were influenced by Europen folk music. Here is their most famous song “Dooba Dooba Rehta Hoon” from the debut album.
Colonial Cousins
Colonial Cousins was formed by the legendary duo – Hariharan, the lead singer and Leslie Lewis, the composer. They started collaborating in 1992 by fusing Indian and Western music. Their songs “Sa Ni Dha Pa” and “Krishna” became quite famous with the audience.
Ta Thaiyaa by Falguni Pathak
Falguni is one of the cult vocalists of Indi Pop who was a rage in the ’90s. Her debut album was released in 1998 and she has also recorded numerous songs for Bollywood movies later on. She is very popular with the Gujarati community where she is called to perform with her band for popular festivals like Navratri. “Chudi jo khanki haathon mein“, “Maine payal hai chhankai“, “Meri chunar udd udd jaye“, “Ayi pardesh se pariyon ki rani” and “Sawaan Mein” mark some of her hits.
