Indian Classical Music (Carnatic/Hindustani) is a sound statement about the profoundness of life. Performing such music is said to activate chakras and connect a soul to the universe.
Only lately not everyone is left with a taste for it. It is treated like something very ancient and with a set of rules that are not of coming age or quite liked by the current generation.
But that’s a really sad state of affairs and doesn’t seem fair as once you get the knack of it you are indulged for life. And there is no music on earth that doesn’t originate from classical music.
And one guy from Canada fell in love with Indian music and made it his life’s mission to learn and master both Carnatic and Hindustani forms becoming a musician who can be termed as one of the major flag bearers of classical music for the 90s kids, millennials, and Gen Z. He is Abby V, an Indian-Origin musician who has picked the music, notes, and compositions so well that you could just quiz him and he would keep singing ragas on rapid-fire.
This time he is here to amaze the audience with Padma Bhushan Srimati Sudha Ragunathan. The Indian Carnatic vocalist, singer, and composer is an eloquent musician who was also conferred with Padma Shri, Kalaimamani, and Sangeetha Kalanidhi.
In a short music video that has been posted across several platforms namely – Instagram, Facebook, and Youtube, Abby V and Sudha Ragunathan followed the viral TikTok trend of musicians calling restaurants or grocery stores. The duo showed us what would happen if “Carnatic musicians order groceries” bringing forth an Indian version of the otherwise global trend.

Until last month, Abby was on his trip to India when he met the ace Carnatic musician and hoped into this collab in Chennai.
As seen in the clip, Sudha Ragunathan Ji calls the grocery store and asks them to send Milk by singing Paal Vadiyum Mugam which is based on the Raga Raga Nattaikurinji. Next Abby joins in and reminds us of adding bananas by performing Pazham Neeyappa based on Raga Shanmukhapriya. This is followed by butter with the song Vennai Thinna Chinna based on Raga Kamboji and ended with Abby V’s all-time favorite Coffee with the song Kapi Madhuripuna based on Raga Kapi.
They chose these songs by playing with words and lyrics that described the grocery items or ingredients that they ordered.
At the end of the video, Abby asks the audience if they want another part of the experiment.

Within 12 hours of release, the video has garnered over 100K views across the platforms on social media. Combined with Insta, TikTok, FB, and YouTube, it sits at around 200k now after 18 hours of release.
More Experiments With Carnatic and Hindustani Vocal
Abby sure knows how he could play around the traditional music and make it relevant for the new-age listeners.
Earlier he had been posting several Raga Experiments which include – 73 Ragas By Abby V – where he is somewhat playing and performing a Raga Quiz.
