A man from Kolkata is doing something that we all should learn from. He is on a mission to remind the people to respect the Indian National Flag.

Priyo Ranjan Sarkar from Bally, Howrah, collects the Indian flags that people discard after national celebrations. He has been collecting them from the garbage heaps on the roadsides and program halls for years. At the moment, he has a collection of over one lakh flags that he keeps in his house.

Sarkar collects the flags to protect the dignity of the national symbol and hopes that one day the Government will introduce strict laws for those who wrongly discard the national flag on roadsides after any national event celebrations.

For the same, he has been nicknamed “The Flagman of Howrah.” Every year on 26 January (Republic Day), 23 January (Netaji Jayanti), and 15 August (Independence Day), Sarkar is seen picking up the abandoned flags after the celebrations.

“My mother and my grandmother always told us that the Flag is our identity. So, I strongly think Government should bring in laws through which people who casually leave flags on the road should be put to task,”

Sarkar told News18 network.

His collection has become a point of attraction for which people often visit his house to admire his flag collection. Every year, on Independence Day, Sarkar hoists a flag in his home and pledges to protect its dignity.

New Delhi has got its own portal called Samman Tiranga which similarly collects ditched flags to protect its dignity. You can visit their website for further details.
