“Good Morning, Vietnam!”. If you read that with the voice of someone else running through your mind, you might want to read till the end of this article.
Today marks the second death anniversary of Robin Williams, one of the world’s most adored comedians. He was not just a normal comedian, but also an actor, director, producer, writer, singer and a voice artist. Yes, this man also lent his voice to several animation films and gave life to them. Williams decided to end his life and died as a result of asphyxiation on August 11, 2014, but later, his wife revealed that the real killer was a disease called ”Lewy Body Dementia”.
An Outstanding Career
Robin Williams is nothing short of an outstanding career and the moment his death was announced, there could not have been a single person in Hollywood who failed to mourn. In every film he acted, Williams won the respect of directors and left them amazed with his spontaneous talent. His filmography, bibliography, and biography is too huge to fit in an article, but for anyone who admired art, this man was definitely a legend.
“For me, comedy starts as a spew, a kind of explosion, and then you sculpt it from there, if at all. It comes out of a deeper, darker side. Maybe it comes from anger because I’m outraged by cruel absurdities, the hypocrisy that exists everywhere, even within yourself, where it’s hardest to see.”
Though Robin Williams’ soul had separated from his body, he left most of it in his works, be it his performances, books or movies. To get a glimpse of the amount of insane talent he had, I would recommend watching “Good Morning, Vietnam”, which is probably his one of the most famous movie till date.
A Humble Human Being
Even off stage, Robin Williams was an amazing personality. Almost everyone who ever worked with him described him as a “good friend”. He even loved animals and was once invited to meet Koko, a gorilla that could communicate using sign language in 2001. Koko liked Williams so much that he smiled after a very long time when Williams communicated to him. After the news of Robin Williams’s death was conveyed to Koko, the gorilla mourned by showing ‘tears’ in sign language.
“Having George W. Bush giving a lecture on business ethics is like having a leper give you a facial, it just doesn’t work!”
Williams was also brave to criticize politicians and he was well aware of social issues. His interviews to most media outlets were simple, but they were also very humorous and thought-provoking. In fact, that is why he said that some of his comedy comes from “Hypocrisy that exists everywhere”.
Remembering Robin Williams
Williams’ daughter announced a few days back that she was getting off social media to remember her father. The irony of Robin Williams’ death is the fact that the man who succeeded in making the world laugh decided to take down his own life. He said that he ‘had it together’ in an interview, a few months before his death.
However, the death of Robin Williams sparked an awareness and many people who had no idea about Lewy Body Dementia later learned about it. Doctors are also working to treat patients better and they are learning more about the disease.
In the 64 years Robin Williams lived on earth, he definitely left a legacy behind for humanity to look on. Hollywood and the rest of the artists around the world will definitely remember him as a legend, and for the common population, Williams could be titled as the “Man Behind Many Million Smiles”.
