We all have loved Smurfs, those tiny blue forest dwellers and their magical appearance and encounter with the human world. From animation to motion pictures, these little mystical beings never failed to amaze us. And most of us are now waiting with bated breath for the upcoming yet-untitled Smurfs movie slated to release on December 20, 2024. This movie is allegedly by Puss in Boots director Chris Miller.
While it might be a bit difficult to wait that long to watch The Smurfs in a new package, you can keep up the excitement by celebrating them on June 25, 2022.

It was June 25, 2011, that marked the first Global Smurfs Day to celebrate the release of The Smurfs movie. Now it has become an annual soiree uniting Smurf lovers to express their love for these blue characters.

Origin
Many of us would be surprised to know that the Smurfs originated in 1958 as they were created by Pierre Culliford (Peyo pen name), a Belgian cartoon. The original habitat of Smurfs was mushroom-like homes in Smurf Village.
On air
These mystical characters debuted on television in 1965. Their silver screen entry was as the main characters in an animated black and white movie, The Adventures of the Smurfs.” It was released in Belgium’s theatres. In the early 1980s, the Smurfs debuted in the United States, and the cartoon show aired on TV from 1981 to 1989. On June 13, 2022, Sonic, a part of India’s leading kids’ entertainment franchise Nickelodeon, brought the international show, The Smurf. It airs from Monday to Sunday at 11:30 am IST.
Several Smurfs characters
Most of us might be aware of Smurf characters such as Papa Smurf, Smurfette, Jokey Smurf and Brainy Smurf. However, there are a few more, such as Nosey Smurf and Finance Smurf. In fact, there are over 100 Smurfs characters! A few of them get their names according to their nature or spirit. While some are christened following their vocation.

Enjoy this day, which is also a Saturday, by watching all the original Smurfs cartoon shows. For cine buffs, Smurfs movies include five feature-length films and two short films. They are Les Aventures des Schtroumpfs, The Smurfs and the Magic Flute, The Smurfs, The Smurfs 2 and Smurfs: The Lost Village.
