Cows, buffaloes, goats, sheep, yak, camel, or any animal whose milk is consumed by humans is actually meant for the animal’s calf.
For thousands of years, humans have been depriving the calves of their mother’s milk and snatching it away, calling it their food. With the modernization of dairy farms, these animals are artificially inseminated with utter cruelty to produce milk.
Animal husbandry has much more horrors that would need an entire book or several volumes of it to be described, and the knowledge might give you nightmares for years. In its whim to conquer the world, our species has done incomprehensible damage to nature, let alone animals.
It’s time we stop overlooking it and act like ‘sheep’. These barbaric acts have caught the attention of millions of activists and scientists. They have been working for more than a century to develop alternatives for what we have been fed without knowledge and morality.
On World Milk Day, we present you with a list of vegan alternatives to milk that’s no less nutritious and wholly plant-based with zero animal cruelty.
Soy Milk
Soy Milk is both rich in protein and contains less fat than dairy milk. Medical reports suggest that isoflavone compounds that are similar to the female hormone estrogen in soy milk can lower cholesterol, reduce menopausal symptoms and boost bone density.
Almond Milk
Almond milk contains the lowest levels of saturated fat and calories. It can be used as a dairy alternative for a multitude of preparations and is already being used more often in the patisserie and confectionary circles.
Cashew Milk
Cashew milk is rich in calcium just like cow milk. India produces a large quantity of cashew and so turning to cashew milk in those coastal belts, wouldn’t be a bad idea.
Rice Milk
Rice milk has a relatively higher fiber content than all the other non-dairy alternatives. It can be used in various recipes and is the most common alternative for making tea. It is also a superior source of B vitamins, magnesium, phosphorus and is packed with carbohydrates, making it a go-to energizing beverage.
Coconut Milk
Ice creams and other dairy-based sweet dishes can be made with almost any non-dairy alternative. But coconut milk is the go-to option as it comes closest to giving you that dairy flavor and texture. It is also high in potassium and blends with almost every dish that it is added to.
Hazelnut Milk
Hazelnut milk is rich in both calcium and flavour. A good source of carbohydrates, it can be used to make coffees and chocolate shakes and everything else you might’ve thought you’re missing out on without dairy products.
Oat Milk
Oat milk is high in fiber and protein. You could have it with your bowl of corn flakes for a nutritious breakfast or use in other recipes as you see fit.
Walnut Milk
Walnut milk is high in nutrients and delicious in taste. It can be a part of your cereal or of a milkshake or you can also add date syrup to sweeten it and nourish yourself with just a glass of it!
Trust me, all these kinds of milk are utterly delicious. You gotta taste it to believe, and save the planet.
