The majority of trans women end up begging on the streets or have to involve in prostitution. But there have been several attempts in recent years to improve their livelihood and integrate them into society.
In its West Bokaro Division in Jharkhand, Tata Steel is accepting applications from transgender persons for Heavy Earth Moving Machinery (HEMM) operator (trainee) position. The steel firm is well-known for employing members of the LGBTQ+ community.
“Tata Steel,… India Workplace Equality Index certified (for LGBTQ+ inclusion) is looking for candidates (Transgenders only) for the position of HEMM Operator Trainee (Dumper, Drill Dozer, Excavator, Pay Loader, Crane, etc.) for its coal division at West Bokaro, Ramgarh, Jharkhand,” the company stated in its job posting.
The position is only open to people who have completed their Matriculation and were born between September 1, 1981, and September 1, 2003. A written exam, an interview, and a practical orientation test will evaluate the candidates. They will next be subjected to a series of medical tests.

The firm was designated a Top Employer for LGBT+ inclusiveness by the India Workplace Equality Index (IWEI). It is the first thorough benchmarking research in the country, assessing the progress achieved toward LGBTQ+ inclusion. IWEI Top Companies is the authoritative list that displays the finest employers in India for lesbian, gay, bi, and trans employees, according to a press release from the business.
“Tata Steel’s recognition as a Top Employer 2020 acknowledges the company’s dedication to furthering equality for LGBT+ people,” the statement continued.
In 2019, the steelmaker implemented a new human resource policy that allowed LGBT workers to declare their partners and use all HR perks permitted by law.
The Kochi Metro Rail Limited in 2017 also employed over 23 members of the trans community. Kerala was the first state to pass the Transgender [People] Policy, ensuring that the group was not discriminated. The state government also announced a statewide transgender education program and a 10-day poll to determine the number of transgender persons.
