While we sit in the comfort of our homes, there are many out on the streets that are shivering to death with the bite of winter. Sometimes there’s a lack of food, and sometimes they don’t even have a place to sleep. It’s even worse for those who don’t have a voice.
As the wave continues, several people from around India have come forward with innovative shelters for the stray cats and dogs who are braving the chill.
Let us meet them.
Vibha Tomar
Vibha Tomar, a veterinary student and founder of Oscar Charitable Trust (for animals) in the national capital has donned the cap of a good samaritan by making warm beds out of large tyres and old sacks for our furry friends. Tomar said that she got the idea from a social media post.
Tomar claims that nearly 100 animals have received these tyre-beds.
“The animals are okay during the day but the night gets too cold for them. I have covered 100 animals so far and am very positive that this will have a positive effect on strays,” she informed.

She has been actively aiding the fur buddies throughout the pandemic by feeding them and also making them wear radium bands to save them from road accidents at night.
Abhijit Dowarah
Abhijit Dowarah, a smart animal lover from Assam’s Sivasagar town has created makeshift kennels for strays by picking up cases of old and unused TV sets. He did not want the dogs to suffer out in the cold.
On learning about his initiative, “Baator Ghor”, some like-minded people, including a vet, joined him in the cause. The locals know Dowarah as an “innovator” who transforms scrap into utility items.
“Over the past five years, I have created some 50 utility items from scrap. So, people don’t throw away old and unused stuff but give them to me. There were seven old TV sets lying at my two-room residence in Sivasagar’s Phukan Nagar. I thought if I can turn these into the stray dogs’ shelters, they can beat the winter chill,” Dowarah said.

Every Wednesday and Sunday Abhijit feeds the dogs on the streets. They also treat those dogs that are sick.

“All living beings on this planet desire to live. Some express themselves through words, but there are some who can’t express their feelings through words. I request you all to build such BAATOR GHOR, write your name and place them in the streets. Also, don’t forget to upload pictures along with the dogs. Your one big step can influence many,” appeals Abhijit.
Ghaziabad Society Shelter
A society in Vaishali, Ghaziabad made sure to do something for these helpless animals by making beautiful small ‘dog houses’ on their premises. These shelters comprise of a little shed cover and have warm blankets as the base for the animals.
The initiative has been widely lauded by the netizens.
