Saree has been worn in the Indian subcontinent for centuries now. It is the part of the Indian identity that has been adorned since the Indus Valley Civilisation and flourished during 2800–1800 BC. With the passage of time, it has evolved and been woven into millions of varieties that add grace to the ladies.
Yet our clothing choices were deeply impacted by the colonization. European clothing came to be seen in the light of aristocracy and portrayal of one being educated. Even post-independence, the cultural mutation continued which remained evident in the clothing as well. Things magnified more with globalization.
Yet the Government has always upheld the code of Indian clothing and even now the majority of the Indian population wears them.
It is called the six yards of elegance for a reason. No matter what a lady wears, a saree alone brings out the best of the indigenous features.
Lately, during the lockdown and the period that has followed, Indian women have come forward with challenges and videos that have embraced saree like never before.
