WHO has picked the theme: “Our Planet, Our Health” this year on World Health Day. This is the 72nd year of celebrating World Health Day.
We are a part of our planet and our planet is a part of us. It is a completely symbiotic relationship that we share with our earth. And so taking care of the planet’s health is equally important as taking care of ourselves.
Almost all are aware of the farm that is being done to the environment with industrial and hazardous domestic activities. And thankfully a bunch of startups, organizations, governments, and individuals are taking all necessary steps, creating innovative sustainable methods to save the planet and in turn our health.

Waste Ventures India
Waste Ventures India is a startup based out of Telangana that is providing waste solutions for housing societies and corporate offices by composting organic waste and recycling dry waste.
The startup is able to reduce waste out of the gate (office or society) by up to 90 percent and leave a green footprint. Its R&D team has developed a scientific, fly-less, and odorless process to manage organic waste, thus producing high-quality compost in the process. The firm also provides a free portion of the compost for personal garden use. They spread awareness about waste management among residents and employees and help them learn about composting, recycling, and other green initiatives.
Beco
Beco is a consumer goods company that manufactures biodegradable and sustainable alternatives to single-use products such as dinner napkins, toilet rolls, facial tissues, tissue rolls,s and more. Founded by Aditya Ruia, Anuj Ruia, and Akshay Varma in 2018 in Mumbai, Beco (Be Eco) offers kitchen, home care, and personal care products.
They use biodegradable and compostable raw materials like corn starch and bamboo to prepare various SKUs of tissue, straws, toothpicks, and cotton balls, among others. The company also utilizes recycled and craft paper to package, thus eradicating the need of plastics.
Nexus Power
Nexus power leverages nanotechnology to make biodegradable electric vehicle batteries from crop residue such as unburnt stubbles (The ones that are the major air polluting element in Delhi during winters).
They apply a unique extraction and filtration process and manufacture rechargeable energy-storing cells. Multiple cells go into making the Internet-of-Things (IoT) and AI-based sensor-enabled battery pack which is later installed in electric vehicles.
Phool
Phool.co converts floral waste into charcoal-free luxury incense products.
The startup has also developed “Fleather”, a viable alternative to animal leather which was recently awarded PETA’s best innovation the Vegan World.
The company operates in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh.
