Born as Angad Gummaraju to Bengaluru-based parents, the young doctor studied in Kasturba Medical College in Manipal where she had to face a lot of scrutiny for being the only trans-woman in a boys hostel. Her struggle of hiding her identity until attaining the courage to come out has been stunningly depicted in one of her short films that shows the suicidal tendency that develops in those like her.

She is now a well-known vlogger and has been constantly documenting her transition journey on her YouTube channel ‘The Trinetra Method’. She also has a series of posts on her Instagram handle that shares each step of her journey.

When I was born, my family was overjoyed at their firstborn child – a son. But I never thought of myself as a boy. I’d wear Maa’s saree, put on her makeup & parade around the house. Initially, everyone found it cute, but when they saw this ‘phase’ go on for longer than expected, they hid these items from me, saying, ‘You’re too old for this’,” Trinetra said, remembering her troubled childhood.

And that was not all. She soon had a baby brother but could not accept being addressed as an ‘older brother’. Moreover, she was forced into masculine activities like sports which she never enjoyed. Things got worse when she reached high school. There were days when she tried to harm herself and prayed that she was normal. It was at that time when she revealed the truth to her parents but they were in constant denial.

Since then, being open about her gender identity cost her a lot.

My classmates began harassing me – they’d feel me up; when I flinched, they’d say, ‘We know you like this’. Even my teachers didn’t spare me. I was made to read out loud in class only for them to mock my voice”, the doctor shared.

But Trinetra did not give up on life. She streamed all her anguish into studies and made it her way to prove her mettle. Soon she chose her aim and it was to join the medical field.

I channelized all my energy towards my studies. That was the one thing no one could take away from me. Over time I realized I wanted to use my knowledge in the operating room. I wanted to be a doctor. I finally found my path”, Trinetra said with pride.

The 23-year-old underwent a gender confirmation surgery (GCS) abroad in February this year. She changed her name from Angad to Trinetra after Goddess Kali only after the operation and her new identity was celebrated by her parents who threw a party in Bengaluru.

I thoroughly enjoy the operating room. It’s the one place I can use my artistic skill in a humanitarian way, because surgery, I feel, is the noblest kind of art that exists. It’s also a fantastic equalizer: behind masks and gowns and scalpels, no one cares what lies between your legs, or who you sleep with, or what fabric you adorn outside of the OR,” the doctor quotes.
